A little bit of history
Ushuaia is the capital of Tierra del Fuego in Argentina. It is known to be the southernmost city in the world, with more than 9,000 square meters. Its first habitants were the Indian tribe of the Ona approximately 10,000 years ago.
In the 19th century, Ushuaia was hosting mainly British subjects and missionaries in a time when the Argentinian government was not founded in a stable manner. Ushuaia then became a land in which to send the most dangerous prisoners along with some political prisoners from Buenos Aires. There they built the southernmost railway, known today to be the great tourist attraction under the name of “End of the World Train”.
Today, known to be one of the must-do stops of the Pentagonia and Antartic tour, Ushuaia is a preserved wild treasure offering breathtaking settings! From skiing in the Andes mountains, sailing in the Beagle Channel to meeting a Sea Lion, Ushuaia will transport you to the edge of the world.
Surrounded by the tropical forest and near the ocean, the tundra climate in Ushuaia is challenging: from 30°C maximum down to a severe -21°C. Such an extreme climate along with the rugged nature you will definitely experience the great thrill of adventure thrill.
The national dish
The King Crab: As its name indicates, one of the most typical dishes of Ushuaia comes from the sea! In mostly all restaurants, you will have the chance to either choose your living king crab or order a secret recipe cooked King Crab! It can be served in every form possible, as an appetizer, as a mousse with Patagonian shrimp, or with vinaigrette and pepper! A real sea air sensation in the mouth!
Ushuaia in its whole is a must-see! The land offers so much diversity, with exceptional changes of scenery from its Glacier to its National Park, that defining only one place is painful. But the Beagle Channel is definitely the must-do of your Ushuaian exploration. From this authentic and rough canal, you will get the best panoramas and discover, from a very close perspective, Ushuaia mountains and the wonders of the isles!
